DESIGN INDABA: Fashion Rising Presented by Studio One Eighty Nine

Studio One Eighty Nine launched Fashion Rising to empower women by building sustainable fashion and artisanal businesses.

New York-born, Ghana-based Abrima Erwiah, of Ghanaian/Ivoirian descent, and actress Rosario Dawson co-founded Studio One Eighty-Nine as a social enterprise to promote and curate African and African-inspired content through various media and cultural projects. The collective includes artists, musicians, dancers, architects, designers, photographers, innovators, thinkers and activists from countries all over Africa and its diaspora.

Studio One Eighty Nine launched Fashion Rising in support of V-Day’s One Billion Rising – a global movement to stop violence against women and girls – as their contribution to the campaign through empowering women by building sustainable fashion and artisanal businesses. The majority of their products are made in Ghana, with some items in Uganda and Liberia and some textiles in Mali and Kenya.
