Introducing the NEW Simona Bag
The Hand-Woven Raffia Simona Bag is inspired by the colors
of the Ghanaian flag and its connection with Jamaica's rich history.
Studio 189's partnership with ASIGE (Advocacy for Social Inclusion and Girls Education) to produce the Simona bag supports job creation, education and empowering opportunities for women in Northeastern Ghana.
Materials that make up the bag include raffia, millet husk and hibiscus.
Sourced directly from the rural beauty of Bolgatanga in Northeastern Ghana, these materials draw us closer to nature.
Artisans of the ASIGE community drew upon their shared humanity and ancestral skill to produce the Simona bags through a time-intensive process without any electricity.
During the dry season, it takes about 3-4 weeks to prepare materials and 1 week for a master artisan to weave the bag.
Hand weaving remains an important part of culture in Northeastern Ghanaian.
